Art Everywhere

This past August, the UK had an art show.  An extraordinary art show that exhibited works all over the country.  Over 22,000 locations to be exact.  The exhibit showed off works of 57 British artists and made a list of the top 10 artists.  The only female artist that made the top 10 list: Cornelia Parker.  These pieces were placed around the UK on billboards, bus stations, and metro stations.

The project had "no agenda other than to flood our streets with art and celebrate the creative talents and legacy of the UK."

This weeks blog - I basically would like you just reflect and write your thoughts about how art is out and around us.  Do we see enough types of art?  Do you feel like you know what is going on in the art world?  What are the current art trends?  Now, I understand that we live in a small midwestern community.  We see art but not in the same scale that others see it.  For example, Art Basal in Miami or the UK show you just read about.  Now we try to give students a sampling of the types of art that surrounds them - for instance the SOFA show and the Art Institute, but I will admit that it is very overwhelming to stay with the trends and swings in art movements.
How do we get more art into our communities?  Who should be in charge of this grand task?  Does our community do enough or should we be doing more?

Thoughts . . .

  1. We do see art in our community; however, it is a different kind of art that one would not expect; it is not paintings, or charcoal drawings, or sculpture but it is photo shop. Everyday and all around us there is not a picture of a celebrity or model that is not photo shopped. In every magazine, billboard, advertisement, and on every source of social media all the people all look like perfectly athletic, sculpted, tan gods and goddesses. I think this form of art is not good for people, especially easily influenced teens, because it fools people into thinking that in order to be beautiful they must look like them and if the actual person cant even look the photo than it must be impossible. Teen girls especially i have noticed believe that being perfect is the only way to be beautiful and in fact I think that is wrong, I think that flaws are what make everyone unique and beautiful.
I feel like little old Washington does all right for supporting the arts; we have to arts feast, and 5 points hosts our shows. I could always be better but I do not know how or who could do such a giant job.

  2. Art is all around us and the community I do not know very well if they support arts as much as ottawa had. The main things I have seen is the art studio on the square and the art we have done in class. Art is the one thing that is important in my life I apply it everyday and I use it to express my feelings and overall understanding of the world. I appreciate it like no other. It is something that shoupd always be important to people. Everything we see is art related. Photoshop is used all the time and art design is always used to advertise the media world. We can get more exposeure to our community if we can have shows and benifts to the students who are always stribing to express their site of the world.
